A very special evening awaits as you enter this elegant, sensual
oasis of cinnebar splashes and postmodern furniture, where the art of sushi meets
American Haute Cuisine in Chicago's Gold Coast. The casual sushi bar and cafe
up front belies the elegance of the fine dining Gold and Red Rooms where contemporary
Japanese cuisine is at its finest. Upstairs is a romantic sake lounge with overstuffed
furniture and a real fire place.Tsunami is tranquil and at the same time sensual;
it has clean modern lines but the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Every room
is different in feel & appearance, but each area flows naturally into the next,
with decor, colors and furnishings melding together to create a work of art.

Executive Chef & co-owner, Ji-no Kim, learned the art of making
sushi as a youngster from his grand parents who owned a Japanese restaurant in
Korea. While studying at the University of Pittsburgh, he worked as sushi chef
at Shogun, a traditional Japanese restaurant, and 4 years later, opened his first
restaurant, Sapporo, located in Crystal Lake. With Sapporo, Ji-no Kim created
a thriving business based on traditional Japanese cooking, but for Tsunami, Ji-no
Kim and partner Steven Song wanted to appeal to a broader market. They created
an innovative sushi menu and a contemporary main dining room menu unmatched in
the city of Chicago.

Chef Doug Cannon came to Tsunami, when the restaurant first opened, as a pastry chef. His culinary skills, natural talent, and love of his profession catapulted him to the position of "Chef - de Cuisine" at Tsunami. His promotion has brought some changes to the back of the house kitchen. Using traditional Japanese ingredients, Chef Doug has redesigned Tsunami's dinner menu, using more exotic vegetables and moving away from the tradition of rice as the base for every plate. With his contemporary specialties, Chef Doug has truly created a menu worth raving about. |
Tsunami is definitely a rising star in Chicago's Gold Coast. In less than one year, this contemporary Japanese restaurant, sushi bar & sake lounge has become a neighborhood hot-spot. The Sake Lounge upstairs is frequented by regulars kicking back in front of the fireplace, partaking of Tsunami's selection of fine sakes, wines, imported beers, ports and liquors. A Tsunami Sake Flight is a must. Seating is always at a premium upstairs after 7:00pm. Sushi is served in the main dining room as well as at the Sushi Bar. Reservations are recommended. All major credit cards accepted. Valet parking. |
