*** Each year, 19 million people ride the cars, which move along a continuous loop of steel cable running in a slot under the street. A gripsman start the car by mechanically gripping the cable and stops it by releasing the grip. Twenty-six single-enders operate on the Powell lines, and 11 double-enders run on the California line.
*** The Powell-Hyde line runs from Powell and Market Streets to Aquatic Park; the Powell-Mason line from Powell and Market to a point near Fisherman's Wharf; the California Street Line, from the foot of Market to Van Ness. If possible, purchase tickets before boarding at the self service machines located at all terminals and California and Powell Streets.
